Need an exact file size?
Size limits get their own pages, where the quality search runs against your number.
Compress by format
Formats we can read but not write — like HEIC, GIF and SVG — can still be converted to a smaller format.
How much you can expect to save
| Image type | Typical saving | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or camera photo (JPG) | 50–80% | — |
| Screenshot (PNG) | 5–15% | Convert to WEBP |
| Logo or flat graphic (PNG) | Very little | Convert to WEBP or keep PNG |
| Web image (WEBP) | 20–50% | Try AVIF |
Lossy and lossless, in plain words
Lossy — JPG, WEBP, AVIF
Detail your eye is unlikely to miss is thrown away in exchange for a much smaller file. This is where big savings come from.
Lossless — PNG, BMP, ICO
Every pixel is preserved exactly. Nothing can be traded away, so the only levers are smaller dimensions or a different format.
Questions
How small can a file get?+
Photos commonly drop 60–80% with no visible change. Lossless formats like PNG have a floor — converting usually goes further.
Can I hit an exact size?+
Yes, on the size pages. Pick a limit like 500 KB and Under1MB searches for the highest quality that lands beneath it.
Does compression happen on a server?+
No. Your browser does the work and your file is never sent.
Does compressing strip my photo's location data?+
Yes. Re-encoding drops EXIF and GPS metadata, so the file you download carries no location.
Why did my PNG barely shrink?+
PNG is lossless, so there's no quality to trade away — only dimensions or a format change move the needle. Converting a PNG photo to WEBP is usually dramatic.
Will compressing twice make it smaller again?+
Rarely, and it degrades the image each time. Compress once from the original whenever you can.
Can I compress a whole folder at once?+
Drop as many files as you like, run them together, and download the results as one ZIP.
