How this works

Images are the heaviest thing on most pages. Serving a 2 MB PNG where a 300 KB WEBP would do is the most common cause of a poor performance score.

Convert to WEBP, keep dimensions close to how the image is actually displayed, and the page gets faster without anyone touching the design.

Questions

WEBP or AVIF for a website?+

AVIF is smaller; WEBP is supported everywhere. Serve AVIF with a WEBP fallback if you can.

How wide should a web image be?+

About twice its display width, to stay sharp on high-DPI screens.
